Ecuador is a country with natural beauty but few job opportunities, and high levels of poverty. One industry that can create thousands of jobs is mining. But this industry is under attack from internationally-funded environmental NGOs with local chapters. These NGOs are opposed to Ecuadors development and successfully influenced the Constitutional Assembly to issue a mining mandate, which has halted large-scale mining operations since April 2008. Learn more about this issue at www.EcuadorMiningNews.com.

Written and narrated by Competitive Enterprise Institute Journalism Fellow Silvia Santacruz. Produced by Drew Tidwell.

Special thanks to Jaque Mate, producer of the documentary "Minería en Ecuador."

  • So typical of these environmental groups. People think they are really helping but we see the terrible results before our eyes. They have the same agenda in the United States.

  • Oh hey, is this supposed to be a Competitive Enterprise Institute video? Oh my, this is just awful(ly made)!

  • Larger companies such as TEXACO that discharged an estimate of 18 billion barrel of waste in the Ecuadorian Oriente and has fought in courts for years no to accept responsibility? We, Ecuadorians are glad the new constitution protects the country against this type of iresponsible exploitation and at the same time welcomes responsible mining.

  • I guess leftist people would say that there is economical interrests in this information clip, which they claim is therefor not objective, but biased. I would agree that there's possibly economical interrests here. But facts here are also true. Larger companies would improve health and the economy for this country and its citizens. This is a good example on the genuine benefits of the free market economy! To stop free economy is to stop good achievements and development.

  • Too much politician watching.

  • Too much FalseNews watching?

  • This what Obama and his Marxist buddies want America to look like. They want to make energy so expensive it will ruin the economy and we can live like a third world company. Then the "Leaders" can live in luxury while the rich (Obama thinks it is unfair for them to have so much money) live like peons. These Marxists think they are the ones who should be living it up while the masses are all equal, just like it is in all the other failed Marxists societies.
