The instrument shown off in this video is the morin khuur, a horse-head fiddle. It's a 2-stringed bowed instrument with strings made from horse tail hair, and the head is usually sculpted to look like a horse's head, hence the name.

When we were in the South Gobi, we saw a Mongolian music group. After having seen the performance, we decided to try and work towards bringing them over to the UK for a couple of weeks next summer so that their talents and Mongolia are better appreciated. More details about this will come soon.

  • I can surely say that I have never seen a performance like this before. I was able to find the best HD quality youtube live music videos by searching (live events themusicage) on Google.

  • Sorry he is not Russian. He is Mongolian composer and his name is Jantsannorov.

  • Um, it sounds like European classical music played on traditional Mongolian instruments. Very nice, but not traditional Mongolian.
