@TheCurryBread No offense but you might want to take a film studies course through distance education or at night school. Carax makes reference to the Nanking massacre earlier in the film which explains (But does NOT justifiy) Merde's actions. He (Carax) requires you to put in some effort on your own. (Like Jean Cocteau did years earlier). It is not fair to call it a "Cheap attempt" simply because he did not spoon feed you. Cheers.
Regardless of what the true intention behind the Merde scenes really is, I think it's lost in the portrayal. Would I have been able to tell that these creepy and poorly comedic scenes had anything to do with the Japanese-Chinese struggles? No. I think it was a cheap attempt and the director wasn't able to get his intention across well enough with this script, assuming he truly had an intention. It's not a catastrophe - it's just... bad.
Has anyone of you actually seen the movie? the man-in-green-suit-storyline has very ineresting layers, which you realize when you watch until the very last frame. it's about japan's struggle in regards of the relationship to china and it's historic guilt, while the man in the green suit incorporates an alien, cultural entity, gasping for life by the spirit of a madmanHe hates the innocent, as he says in the court scene,an unleashed vessil that cannot bare harmony. An old, once powerful, entity.
