Designer Christien Meindertsma of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, has accepted the INDEX:Award 2009 in the Play category for her study and resulting book on the 185 product groups supported by a single commercial-farm pig. http://www.designtoimprovelife.dk

PIG 05049 is the first communications design given by the international jury of INDEX: and the book of the same title is to be made available free of charge on the Internet. Meindertsma's work revealed surprising commercial uses for pigs, from ammunition and train brakes to medicines and fine bone china -- as well as more predictable uses such as foodstuffs along the lines of frankfurters and sausages. INDEX: Design to Improve Life gives the richest prize for design in the world -- 500,000 euros -- on a biennial basis, as the Danish government's outreach program for humanitarian design. Design to Improve Life is Denmark's INDEX: to a better world.

  • Ach! Welcher fabelhaften schweineri...

Anyway, a very interesting thought, to follow a piglet form its cradle to its many graves as an atomised adult.

Oink, Oink..! Long live the pig, and its many uses on the 'other side'.
