This Hunter penned song was Barry Manilow's last US Top 10 hit in 1979. Clive Davis was a big fan and played this song for Barry. Here is a rare performance by Ian.

  • Ian, in this video, shows hardly any of the flamboyance of his hey-day, but projects himself as sort of an aging, has-been rocker. Funny thing is, one can almost feel that the his show of humility here is intentional. If so, he pulls it off with grace and beauty. What a guy.

To those who don't like his voice, bear in mind that he's not a 'young dude' anymore. Keep an open mind and listen to the original studio version, then post here again.

  • Ian never performs this song. It's not really his style. Too much of a rocker to be like Rod Stewart. This only exists because he needed 18 songs that would work with a world class orchestra. And the people in Olso probably asked him to do it. And his voice has hardly changed in 30 years.

  • inspired in blackpool while walking with his dad on bispham beach a short walk from his parents house about a man trying at last to show his feelings to his son before it is too late and in writing this song over a period of many years a son also showing his own love for his dad (wasted on manilow )

  • Yes. But Ian hasn't charted since Schizo 1979... and is only well off because of covers. Many 70s icons did not make it finacially until the 90s when TV shows, movies, and commercials licensed their songs. Ian and Iggy are 2 prime examples.

  • @Thriceitup5335 Agreed. One man's lullaby is another man's alarm clock.

  • @Thriceitup5335 If I wanted to hear someone sing the phonebook (do they still exist?) I'd find your comment hard to argue with.

  • If this performance doesn't get to you, you're a zombie.
