to be support troops, supply lines, ambulances etc. for what was taking place about 1/2 to a full mile to the west and southwest of here (on the west side of Antietam creek)- the middle line assault part of the battle (Bloody Lane). I would even venture to say I believe the pic was taken at the exact time the assault was happening, and that is why it has come to be called an "actual battle photo" as it was very close to the action. Thanks guys , and once again, only my opinions..not positive

Burnsides advance troops trying to cross at the bridge. The fog and possible smoke in the old photo might be why you can't really see much more on the horizon. I don't think that new photo I pointed it out is taken from the EXACT spot, but somewhere close, and as all of you Civil War buffs know, who have taken 100's of pix and compared them to the old ones, you don't have to move a whole lot of distance to change the perspective. So, I believe the old photo's troops and horses on the left.......

fog and dampness( lots of rain fell the night before the battle) as well as what could be smoke from the battle lines drifting west to east. Counting on Mr. Frassenito's info of where the pic was taken, that would pretty much eliminate the idea that this was an "actual" battle photo, as the only fighting that occurred east of Antietam creek was down at Burnsides Bridge, and that is just from the standpoint of the rebel lines were west of the bridge, but yet firing east across the bridge at.....

Darmok4349- thanks once again for posting this doc on the battle- GREAT JOB! Thanks also for the info on the "battle" photo. I kind of knew that's where it was & why I posted the earlier comments- I have been there numerous times. Not sure if you got the chance to look at the modern day photo of the Pry House DavePerry & I were commenting on- he didn't think it was the area, as of a few diff hills-angles- flat horizon in the old photo, etc., but as you see in the old photo- there was a lot of...

OK, thanks. I've sent you a private message.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.
Another interesting this is how high up the perspective is on Burnside's bridge at 4:55. That must have been taken from a very steep nearby hill, unless it was taken from a balloon.

@DavePerry2012 The first picture discussed "Taken during the Battle" was shot , according to author William Frassanito, just south and west of the Pry House. The picture is looking south west.

Hey troops..me again.... Go to FaceBook and go to National Museum of Civil War Medicine photos Pry House and look at Photo#7 and see if you all think that could be a modern day shot of that supposed actual" battle" photo (signal station at the Pry House) kind of looks like it could be it, looking in the same direction . There was not as much tree growth back then. Am I crazy? Thanks!

Great, thanks for taking the time to look that up. It should be possible to reconstruct the area in view on the map, then, and figure out just what part of the battle is shown.
I'm curious: have you heard of any other in-progress photos surviving from any other battles? I've read that this is the only one (and maybe one other from Antietam).
