When you buy a car you usually buy it for its fuel economy, reliability, and the colour it arrives in.
Now just imagine the colour you chose looks dated, well you have to go out and spend another fortune on a newer model or buy a Smart.
Toyota should never have tried to compete with Smart because a Smart is unique in the way its built
The Smart is unique in its market the IQ is not, the Aygo,C1,107,Fiat 500
The Smart & IQ cost too much thats why they are both a rare sight

A Smart not being a proper car What nonsense.
A proper car is something that has four wheels,a steering wheel and is easy to park, just like the original Mini.
Unlike the Toyota IQ my Smart has a diesel engine and has given me a genuine 90mpg.
Unlike the IQ and any other car availble my Smart has plastic bodypanels and if you get bored with the colour of your car like i have you can change the entire colour of your vehicle. THATS HANDY
You see why try and compete with a Smart

@llandudnoboy As with any new technology, you can expect to pay a little more; be-it a Smart Phone or a Smart Car. Here in the US, people just "like what they like." Some folks aren't going to consider a VW or a Diesel...just because, and that's okay. I agree NAV prices seem high, but it's the wave of the future. Prices will get better. I still like the style & drive of the Prius. One thing's for certain, the future holds amazing technology unveils & we're sure blessed to see it.

@llandudnoboy Oh "boy," - I appreciate your sense of humor! Thanks for your witty reply; some folks can get down-right snarky when talking about their favorite cars.
I don't sell cars, but I do work for a LARGE U.S. Toyota Dealership in the IT department so I'm privy to their prices (public & private.) I'm a Toyota loyalist of sorts because I think they represent a superior product. THAT'S MY OPINION, not to say it's the ONLY superior product on the market.

Not if you damage one of those unique bodypannels which a friend did recently.
She is now £600 worse off.
Now if she had bought the Smart i could have given her a free wing and door pannel and fitted them for her in less than an hour.
You see the IQ is being too clever trying to compete with a car that is totally different.
A Smart is a two seater and if its the Cdi a fuel miser aswell.
The Smart has SAT/NAV as standard it costs nearly £1000 in the IQ.
No contest.

I used to own the Aygo Diesel and that was a magnificent little car with real world fuel economy of 80+ to the gallon.
The Aygo,Pegeot 107or Citroen C1 are all lovely little cars and far better value than the way overpriced Toyota IQ.
-
If you compare like with like and cars of similar price.
The VW Golf Tdi 5dr costs much the same as a Prius and the Golf returns better fuel economy, seats 5 very comfortably and retains more of its value longterm.
There are few cars able to match the residual value of a well maintained Golf be it petrol or diesel.

Blimey your surname must be Gates.
20k+ for a vehicle whose economy is only average compared to say the far better VW Golf TDi Bluemotion.
en there are several superb and slightly cheaper Turbodiesels available which return better fuel economy it makes little sense buying a Prius.
The IQ is no alternative to the Smart, blimey they want nearly £1000 for the Sat/Nav on the base models.
Both the Smart & IQ are way too expensive.

@CarlosGraOca Interesting thoughts here, however, I don't find the Prius to be uber expensive at all. In fact, it's pretty average priced & if one gets a pre-owned...it's quite affordable for most. I mean, are we really going to balk at a mid 20K priced car anymore? Still, as a self confessed "bad parker" I can't wait to see if the IQ will fit my lifestyle. It would be grand not to worry about parking in Downtown Charleston (SC - USA.)
Excellent car. Far better quality than the Smart. More expensive but worth it

Perfect vehicle for a single student in college who doesn't have a family yet and doesn't make much working a part time job.
