The other film you mention is called "The Best Years Of Our Lives", but I get and strongly agree with your point. I would add "All Quiet On The Western Front", and "The Deer Hunter" to your list as well, although they were from different eras and about different wars.

Astaire is so good in this movie it hurts. This IMHO is his best dramatic role.
