In 2006, the truck belonging to Paballo ya Batho, a charity caring for the inner-city Johannesburg homeless, was stolen.

Paballo ya Batho (Southu for caring for the people) organises a mobile soup kitchen every Wednesday night to support Joburgs homeless community. The loss of the truck made transport of soup and bread to inner-city homeless people near impossible. Something had to be done.

In 2006 a rescue plan was dreamt up. It was hoped that a fundraiser would collect enough money for a new truck. Maybe enough money would be raised to also help pay off some of Paballos debts and allow the charity to put time and money into new activities.

Thats when The Night of 1000 Drawings was born.

The Night of 1000 Drawings is a one night exhibition of original A5-sized drawings, which are sold at a set price of R 100.00. The artworks are sponsored by various sectors of the community e.g. school children, homeless persons, designers, artists, art enthusiasts, aspiring scribblers and the general public.

The only brief was draw anything with anything on anything A5. The response was overwhelming. A large number of drawings were donated by artists throughout South Africa and from abroad. By donating their time and skill to making drawings, the artists were making a difference and eabling a better future for the homeless people Paballo supports.

After 3 solid years, the Night of 1000 Drawings is a fixture on the Joburg and Cape Town cultural scene. The latest events attracted crowds in excess of 2,000 people.

Thanks to this success, the Nights organizers took on a number of other charities, namely Princess Alice Adoption Home in Johannesburg and Love to Africa in Cape Town.

The Night of 1000 Drawings is also gone international exhibitions will soon take place in Amsterdam and Dubai.

This documentary was filmed and edited by Chiara Frisone. The documentary wouldnt have been possible without the invaluable support of the Team 1000 Drawings.

Thank you to everybody who was involved for making this documentary happen.
