"..I think we can say that the Constitution reflected an enormous blind spot in this culture that carries on until this day, and that the Framers had that same blind spot. I dont think the two views are contradictory, to say that it was a remarkable political document that paved the way for where we are now, and to say that it also reflected the fundamental flaw of this country that continues to this day."

You have it backwards.
In a free-market economy (capitalism) everyone DOES live for the good of others. They have to do something or produce something beneficial in order to convince others to buy their good or service. For example, the Google founders got rich by making it easier for everyone to find information.
Government redistribution actually discourages people to work for the good of all. Why bother when the get nothing out of it?

Then you mean don't vote. McCain and Obama are both socialist. Freedom from religion is something every reasonable person would want. Capitalism is in direct conflict with the ideal that man is his brothers keeper. Religion (mostly christianity in the U.S.) and materialism both demand the idea you are to live for the good of others, and I hold that immoral. Many of the founders were deist, and founded this country on the idea man must be an end in himself-Capitalism demands it.
