This is a clip from Beyond Tomorrow documenting the DARPA Grand Challenge (an autonomous vehicle competition sponsored by the US government). In this clip an engineer describes how his autonomous robot motorcycle works.
I love the attempt but a motorcycle is nothing like a car. On a motorcycle the rider is part of the machine. He is not just simply steering but actively and constantly shifting his weight to control the machine. You can't think of a motorcycle as just another sit down and steer vehicle. It is obvious they lacked the motorcycle riding experience they needed. Next time put a rider on that feels every bump and controls the bike. Its the only way a single track vehicle will succeed.
It's dissapointing with all the technology available that there is still great difficulty in achieving basic mobility. Focus less on GPS co-ords and more on handling the terrain maybe. Not Sure.
At any rate it's great to see smart young minds focusing on making things easier for our troops in the coming centuries(and big grant money) keep it up and best of luck.
really going for the gold trying to make an autonomous motorcycle. as if a regular vehicle isnt hard enough. why not an atv, so if it hits something it will at least stay upright.
@Godv2 Have you seen all the weight at the front? I'm sure that balances it out.

brilliant concept, but i can't help feel there is way too much weight slung out over the back that should really be central... :/
