"There's no sound in space!" is something we read almost daily on forums and in Shattered Horizon trailer comments. No sound seems like a cool idea at first, but its actually very hard to play an FPS without any audio cues - especially in zero gravity, where your opponents could attack from literally any direction.

In Shattered Horizon the player's space suit uses "audio simulation". The idea is that your suit recreates a soundscape based on sensor information of the surrounding environment and detected threats. Audio simulation becomes an essential tool for situational awareness and self-preservation.

Even so, during the closed beta several testers kept asking for a "hardcore mode" with no sound. This inspired a new feature, Silent Running that lets you power down your suit and disable the audio simulation to gain a stealth advantage while sacrificing radar, HUD and maneuverability. This feature video shows silent running in action.

  • MORE IMPORTANTLY: to anyone that actually played this (probab 10% that posted here)

-Does silent running mode have an off/on button, or if you press a button you go silent for a fixed amount of time?

-If you shoot while in silent running mode, does the enemy still see you on the radar temporarily?

If both answers are yes, this could be an excellent tool for sniping.

  • Silent Running has a toggle on/off key. When you are in silent mode you don't show on any radar whether firing or not. Sniping is very, very hard in silent mode as you cannot attach to a surface to stabilize your aim.

  • the reason there is sound in this game is

#1: It wouldn't be fun to play a game with no sounds besides hearing yourself inhale and exhale 12309101 times....

#2: The space suit you're wearing has uploaded audio files. Want proof? Watch the video called Escalation. The suit even says "Pre-loading audio simulation files" and BAM! all of a sudden you hear the sounds of your surroundings.... just listen and it makes all sense and don't make up theories or prove the game physically impossible...

  • another youtuber, that hasnt been paying attention...

  • Great loaction and graphics, but basically its just another tired old shoot-em-up game. Bang bang.

  • @skyseeker901

even when not in silent running, this is much more realistic than most of the other sci-fi movies or games.

  • I wish my computer could handle this..

  • best game evar :)

  • silent running is so dam cool! i played exactly one whole day not knowing about it.. then when logged off checked the keys again.. .so dope!

  • @Lazierc

Yeah, this game has ridiculous system requirements.

They may actually put crysis to shame.

  • I wish you could make a game that forced everyone to do silent running. It'd be probably the most realistic space-sim ever.

  • LOL. someone need to do a no sound mod.

  • is the game funny

  • @crash6917 always attach to a surface and then don't move
