The Ken Burns technique is a popular name for a type of pan-and-scan effect used in video production from a still image. Lately I've seen a new style of "the Ken Burns" effect used on many History Channel Documentaries (and TNT promos) which allows the picture to move in 3-D space, thus giving it a 3-D feel. In order to make this work, the picture must be dismantled into separate layers in Photoshop, and then imported into After Effects as a PSD file. The process is painstakingly slow. Took me 2 days to do this. All this was created with just the flat image itself.
Here's a tutorial on how it's done.

Anyways, thought I'd give it a try. Enjoy.

  • Is there an official name for this effect (not just Ken Burns) because I can't seem to find the really helpful photoshop tutorial on it that I saw a few days ago....

  • @joejumps4fun I agree. Try googling: 3d pan and zoom with After Effects. I just called it that because he makes these effects famous
