A rebuild of two ponds and a large cascade with a long drop waterfall. Since the stream runs over an existing retaining wall I had to ensure that the waterfall sheds the water cleanly with no water escaping over the sides of the spillstone. I cut the spillstone level with a Stihl saw by carefully moving back and forth, side to side to acheive the correct depth of cut.

All parts of the stream were underlaid and lined with all stone and cobbles cemented into position, allowing anyone to walk all over it without ruining the effect or knocking stones into the pond and stream.

The balancing tank contains the pump, an automatic top-up and an overflow. The water enters from the bottom of the wall facing the inside of the pond to prevent the overflow becoming blocked.

  • Just beautiful, how long did that take to make. I dream of something a bit smaller but I am on myway, the pond is there but I need the waterfall and stream. I have seen many of them but yours is right on but you should give some instructions or suggestions. Well done, enjoy it all!

  • There are multi-part instruction videos on my channel. A two part koi pond construction, four part fish pond (and cascade construction) and a six part wildlife pond construction series. Everything you could wish to know will be in those videos. I will add more as I get time.

  • As always the final step has been missed. Should I put the fish or the water in first??

  • Not sure how to answer that one, man.

  • What is the purpose of the balancing tank? does it cut off the waterfall if the pond water get too high?

  • The balancing tank houses the pump, top-up and overflow. If the pond gets too high it overflows with no danger of pipe getting blocked. Once the system is full and running, the top-up knocks itself off and only adds water when needed.
