Just to clarify - Tim Berners-Lee is responsible for the Hypertext and the creation of a web server serving out HTML pages. A very basic begining but the exact same technolgies that CERN first used on their LAN are used now for everthing from YouTube to Facebook.

This is distinct from the Internet which is the physical infrastructure on which the web operates. Many other technolgies share the Internet infrastructure that are independent of hypertext (e.g. filesharing, email, VoIP etc.).
