I put this back track together in GarageBand and Logic as a way familiarize myself with tune. Even though the song has a simple structure, it is really very challenging to play. I have total respect and awe for what Oscar Peterson did with it. This was more of a learning exercise for me. I felt pushed way beyond my comfort zone on this piece, but it is really a joy to play.

  • I know my question may look stupid, but I hardly see why you found this piece very challenging to play, because I saw you can play pieces that sound (but perhaps only sound) much more difficult than this one. It is because of the length, the rhythm or complex chords?

  • Bidooshram, It was the rhythm that was challenging. I never quite got in the pocket on this one. In doing this video, I discovered a particular type of rhythm that I need to work on to get comfortable with.

  • hey 7notemode, i really love these videos they're really helping me expand my voicings, but i had one question for you. what would you call the chord you're playing at 4:24?

it sort of sounds to me like it's functioning as the dominant Bb7 resolving to the tonic, especially with that Bb all the way on top, but with that E in the bass it's more like a tritone substitute. either way there are notes that don't seem to fit.

  • tww909, it's a tritone sub for Bb. E7 9 +11 13 with the 13 inverted an octave below.

  • Greetings from Poland ;-) really QL version - now I started to listen it second time.

Great quality of the recording - piano sound is really great

    Thnaks for vidoe

  • Thanks, fkaluza.

  • Great job, extremely well done!

  • extremely well done!!

  • Flawlessly, hauntingly beautiful!!!

  • Trying to duplicate Oscar's left hand 10ths (pre-stroke) would take ANYONE out of his comfort zone! Love watching people cheat using various substitutes for smaller hands!

  • great job. really :)

  • Hey there 7notemode - good stuff - like all your tutorials - been working on them from time to time. Could you upload the midi of this one to your site? would be quite helpful :) rock on and greetings from Switzerland.

  • I sort of overlooked this tune. I have a copy of it on casette. It is from Oscar's later work. It is an original composition by him and he was never known for composing. His contribution to the art of jazz piano is mainly as interpreter of other peoples compostions. This tune offers fresh voicings for Oscar which is a change and a challenge as he had become boringly predictable over the years. No one played as fast or swung as hard but he was overexposed. I appreciate this tune more now.
