This opening is one of the most majestic passages I know of. . . an unmistakably British --not English, but British-- sensibility, and there's a difference between the two (it's one of attitude). Marked "nobilmente," this music holds its head high. With a dignified posture reminiscent of "Pomp," this is a passage that mirrors the idealism of the British Empire at the very end of its greatest days. Elgar was 50 (we're quick to name Brahms as a latecomer to the symphonic genre --at 43). O Albion!

Superb classic Elgar. Anyone who knows relatively little of his work, but enjoys this, should explore his music further. They won't be disappointed.

If you enjoy this you will also enjoy rachmaninoff's second symphony 3rd and 4th movement especially.

I regard this opening theme as one of the most memorable ever. It is tuneful, perfectly crafted, from the heart. It's altogether irresistible: I was rapt upon first hearing it. The symphony as whole has range, depth, and structure, repaying multilple listenings with interest. I also like this recording.

Thank you for introducing Edward Elgar's Symphony.
I started listening to Eldar 's music by his Cello Concerto No.1 and it is just wonderful! then try to find more about his music. Thank you.

@masterclassicalmusic I am so glad that you enjoyed it! :) You may also like his second symphony which is already uploaded to this channel! :) Thank you for your comment!
This is the first part of the first movement as the movement was too long to upload in one video. The second part of this movement is already uploaded and so is the next movement, and I shall upload the last two movements soon! I hope you enjoy the rest! :)
