Amity Shlaes re-examines the financial history of the Great Depression and critiques the New Deal in her book "The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression." The author argues that it was the fortitude of the individual citizen and not President Roosevelts economic plan that sustained people throughout the depression. Ms. Shlaes recounts the lives of these individuals as well as the proponents and critics of the New Deal. Amity Shlaes discusses her new book with Nick Gillespie, editor-in-chief of Reason magazine.

  • I've got an idea:

You and Amity Shlaes can have a debate on this subject.

She can present her case and then you can stand up, overturn the table and bellow, "FUCK YOU, YOU CAPITALIST WHORE!!!" in spittle-flecked rage.

Then you'll be declared the smartest person in the room, you'll get a Presidential Medal of Freedom (or a Congressional Medal of Honor, whatever) from Obama, and all the people who laughed at you in high school will be sorry. Finally! The respect and adoration you deserve!

  • she's kinda hot.

  • @Chippergold, "People" do take the right seriously, and evidently vote for them. Somehow, they don't need or even remotely desire your respect. Have a nice day.

  • @DecimusIunius Well said.

  • @perezDeSanFernando

Beck is the worst of the bunch. He preys on the ignorance, fear, and xenophobia of the simpletons that comprise his audience. His relationship with Gold Line is a microcosm of his motives and the level of respect he has for his audience.

  • @Chippergold

Believe me, Beck is nothing like Limbaugh, O'Reilly and those people. He's libertarian - he questions American imperialism, the Federal Reserve, studies history and so on. Indeed, the White House wouldn't have organized so many boycotts against him if he wasn't taken seriously.

  • Nick Gillespie is so great. I just read this book by Miss Shlaes, is very good. I don't understand people's violent criticism of her analysis. you can disagree, but those that resort to insults show they have no valid ideas to stand on, or are at least intolerant of civilized debate.

However, she is with the CFR, a Globalist cabal, so caution. she also stands on the assumption that the Fed just didn't know about monetary policy then, oops -- I instead question why the Fed even exists.

  • @DecimusIunius I'm guessing Naomi Klein is not an Amily Shlaes fan?

  • If this woman and others like her were the voice of the right, instead of Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly, Savage, etc. people might actually take the right seriously.

  • This woman has incredible intelligence and insight. Sadly her voice falls on the ears of many who already have their minds all made up and refuse to even listen a little bit.

Disagree with anything someone says and they call profane names and jump and down like apes in a cage.

Instead of engaging in intelligent conversation.

They cannot engage in an intelligent conversation because they have no intelligence.

The peak of their intelligence is calling someone some profanity.
