@ilikefights123456789 Strippers are typically used to "strip" the material from the punch/die. The spring pressure will push the material off the punch. Otherwise you would likely pull the material out of the stock guides in the lower die as the strip is sticking to the tooling. Applies to both pierce and draw operations. Strippers can be used to control the flow of material in a draw operation by the definition you gave.

Strippers are basically just for clamping the steel down, whether it's spring strippers or gas just changes the pressure that holds it down !!

Where I worked 99% of the progressive dies we designed had the stripper mounted on the die even if it was a spring stripper. I never asked why.
