The Dunlin and the Kentish plover are staying over winter getting radiant heat from the sand due to the warm current ( the ocean current ) at Shimao seashore, Toyama Bay Japan. On this day(Jan. 9, 2010), the strong north wind blew, there was 30 cm snow and there was sensible temperature as much as -10 degrees.
The temperature of sand is about +13 degrees in the nearness with the sea water temperature. There is a sand spa which buries the whole body at the sand which was heated with steam on the spa in Japan. This is the same as the principle.
