In today's Gospel, Jesus, in a very direct manner condemns the legalistic and ritualistic spirituality of the Scribes and Pharisees, who are considered models of religiosity and holiness. That attack on the revered spiritual leaders of Israel is a shock to the people hearing Him.
"Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." In effect, Jesus is saying that those who follow the spirituality of the Scribes and Pharisees are damned.
Jesus actually offers a concrete alternative spirituality that leads to salvation -- a spirituality emanating from LOVE that manifests itself in His way of life, a life of service INSIDE THE TEMPLE and life of service OUTSIDE THE TEMPLE -- IN THE COMMUNITY.
The Parish of San Pedro Apostol of Cavite City tries to follow Jesus spirituality. Part of this homily is how the parish follows Jesus concretely.
