In the midst of the Atlantic, close to the Azores, life flourishes at the hot hydrothermal vents around the Menez Gwen underwater volcano. It is these very vents that are the focus of a scientific expedition of 30 marine researchers from Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel and France, who are on board of the research vessel "FS METEOR that set sail on September 6. The expedition is financed by the MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences in Bremen. Under the scientific guidance of Dr. Nicole Dubilier, Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, the researchers are set to investigate the hot vents and their attending biological communities with the help of the deep-sea diving robot "MARUM-Quest". One of the questions the team wants to unravel is why the hydrothermal vents emit so much methane, a very strong greenhouse gas. Another focus of their research will be placed on the deep sea mussels living at the hot vents and harbouring symbiotic bacteria in their gills, which can use the methane gas as food for their hosts.
