The 2012 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Pro with Retina Display saw the addition of USB 3.0. This video looks at how the new interface performs and some ideas on how it can be utilized. Tested is a Lexar flash drive, Intel 520 SSD, 7200 RPM HDD, and an OWC USB 3.0 enclosure.

    If your gonna test an SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure, get a Sata 3.0 USB 3.0 enclose, because Sata 2 pretty much maxes out at 250-300MBps.

    All USB 3.0 should be backwards compatible (or so the wiki page states).... but I guess in this situation, it may end up depending on your blu-ray player.

    You get transfer speeds equivalent to both USB types:  USB 2.0 + 3.0 = USB 5.0!

    This is a secret though, don't tell anyone.

    I have to say I was pretty dang excited. This is what has held me off of buying a new macbook for a while. I was also waiting for them to ditch the optical drive. I just picked up the new Retina 15" Pro :D
