  • Why the hell did General Motors ban racing in 1963, particularly when their cars were selling well because of racing?

  • February 16, 1963, Paul Goldsmith/Ray Nichels beat the Defending Champs the Ferrari GTO by over 5 miles at Daytona Speed Weeks, with a 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 421 Super Duty "Challenge Cup 250" for the WIN ! So GM racing ban, Pontiac wasn't suppose to build factory race cars, so they did the next best thing, build first Muscle Car, Pontiac GTO, since the 1963 421 SD Tempest beat the Ferrari GTO, it was fitting to name new modified Tempest " GTO" !
