what difference does the softness of the pencil make? A very soft pencil, 9B, would be purer graphite, so more or less conductivity? How would this affect the sound?

What's important is not that it's purer (not sure if it is) but that it's softer.
Softer pencil leaves a thinker layer of graphite which makes for a more conductive circuit. Which is a Good Thing.
