John Mclaughlin uses a "360 Systems Frequency Shifter" (an electronic device with the wildly fluid sound of a ring-modulator), to great effect here !

  • One last comment on this incredible performance. If anyone wants to know what being in big surf feels like,....this sound captures it like nothing I have ever heard. Characterizing the "going over the falls" sensation, perfectly. very scary stuff.

    masterpiece.

  • @1Delta I was staggered that this fabulous piece of music wasn't here, so I added it. I have a few live recordings from this period, and as you can imagine John's guitar synth is extraordinary when used on stage !

  • @jonvalinski: Have you uploaded those live recordings yet? I don't see them under this account name . . .

Thanks for this one anyway -- JM is one of a kind!

  • @YouzTube99 Many have already uploaded much live John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra to Youtube already. You can obtain much of this great music for free at jazzfusion.tv

  • I first heard this LP right when it came out. This song was then, and remains, one of a kind. I'm trying to find out what Mclaughlin used to get that incredible, other worldly sound that starts the song off. never heard that sound since, and it's been like 35 years or something.

then he goes into that Headhunters funk bass line and clearly one of the guitar sounds is coming through that guitar synth that he was using. IMHO, this performance stands alone for sheer cosmic power.

    COSMIC!!!!

  • @1Delta One of the first times I ever played my copy, in the early 80's round a friends house, his father had some large speakers.

I soon obtained a pair of Leak speakers with 12" cones that complemented this track perfectly. John McLaughlin uses feedback as we would use conversation !

  • The intro is almost like a soundtrack to Edvard Munch's "The Scream" . Planet Earth's pain personified. Absolute masterpiece.

  • @Guitfiddlejase: You're welcome, but for some reason I can't access either of them now . . .

    ???

  • @YouzTube99 Thanks!!!!!!

    ...very cool!

  • @Guitfiddlejase: Here's a *much* better vid:

  • @Guitfiddlejase: Not sure if I'm matching up to the correct response, but check this out:

    youtube.com/watch?v=O_KbuCEFhxY

Vid quality is, um, barely adequate but the musicianship shines through.

  • @YouzTube99 You mean lately??? I knew about "Wired",but nowadays????

  • How many listeners here know that the incredible drummer here is NOT Billy Cobham? It's Narada Michael Walden, who went on to produce multi-platinum albums for Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in the 80's and 90's.

  • Music ahead of our times, Mahavishnu rocks real skillful musicians. nowadays music is very crappy.

  • I love this song, McLaughlin funk is the best. He goes WAY out there. I wish he still played this stuff. Love his tone.
