how do you go about composing each part? separately or do you have a grand idea all along? I don't think I'd ever be able to do this, i can write music for a couple instruments, but never this many.

I usually start out with the melody, figure out the harmony for it, then orchestrate it. I usually go in sections: the first 8 bars, then the next 8 bars, then the next 16 or something. This particular piece is different from most of my other works because the orchestration changes quite a bit in each section; usually I keep it more consistent, but it's still probably easy to tell where sections begin and end by melody and orchestration changes in my pieces; they tend to be pretty structured.
