I saw Whoopi in " a funny thing..." in 1997 and she was truly hilarious...it didn't take anything away from the superb farce that it is or the lovely score (her singing was adequate, her "schtick" as they used to call it made up fo that) and it prolonged the run of the show by replacing Nathan Lane (who was only Broadway famous at that time, not yet the bigger star he is now) by a world famous actress/comedian..so where is the harm in that ??
You could say that about any role... that the character of Anna Leonowens from "The King and I" WASN'T a female role, but simply hasn't been played by a man yet!
I love Whoopi!!!!!
