Baby's First Steps

Every milestone of your baby's development is exciting for parents. Baby's first tooth, baby's first smile, and baby's first words are just a few examples of the exciting milestones baby's take through their development. The development milestone I am going to talk about today is your baby's first steps.

You can expect to see your baby take their first steps when they are around 12-14 months old. There are no problems if your baby starts walking a bit earlier than this or even a bit later. Baby's start walking when they are ready to walk. Just because your baby is walking later than your friends baby, does not mean that your baby is of less intelligence and does not mean that your parenting skills are not as good as your friends parenting skills. Premature babies can sometimes take a bit longer in reaching their development milestones.

You can't choose when your baby starts walking, but there are a couple of things you can do that may help ready your baby for taking those first steps. Let your baby have plenty of play time in a space where they have room to roll and crawl about. This can help encourage the development of muscle tone and coordination. Also, most experts say that baby's learn to walk easier in barefoot.

Sometimes a baby will wait a bit longer to start walking due to their caution level. You can help your baby to gain some confidence by walking with them by holding both of their hands. Most babies enjoy this new experience and may have you walking with them until you are exhausted!

If you feel your baby may have development delays then you may contact your doctor to discuss your concerns with them. Usually there is no problems with a baby who is a late walker, but it is best to speak to your doctor so that you can get their opinion, and it may help ease any fears you may have.
