N.Y. Town Clerk Quits Over Marriage Equality Law
A town clerk in rural New York has resigned her position rather than comply with the new marriage equality law, citing her religious convictions.

Politico reports on the resignation announced Tuesday by Laura Fotusky, the clerk in Barker, a small town near Binghamton in upstate New York. A Republican elected twice to the post, she issued a statement on the website of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, a group of evangelical Protestants that led protests against the bill, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law last month.
"Fotusky, whose resignation is effective July 21, three days before legal gay marriage takes effect in New York, said she has no plans after she leaves her office, which paid $24,205 last year,

  • Rboyko, using an isolated situation/circumstance to prove an overall point does not really go far. If you don't agree with marriage equality, don't marry someone of the same sex! As a school teacher, I don't ever recall reading/citing the words..."with liberty and justice for ALL" and seeing the word, "except". We can not "eenie meenie miney moe" through our neighborhoods and point to who is allowed marriage or not. I would like to think that she (and everyone) treats all Gods children equally

  • "Happy are those who hunger and thirst for what is right..." I hope Laura doesn't have to go hungry and I applaud her courage and conviction in the face of this new tyranny. By the way, she will not look back with regret. Clearly, her detractors have no understanding of the religious and moral dimensions of this matter nor the spectre of the looming totalitarianism proffered by people who call themselves "liberals".

  • I have no problem with her quitting her job if she won't do her job without discrimination. What I have a problem with is any educated person thinking this is a religious freedom issue. It isn't.

  • @vballgirl102787 I understand what you're saying, but if she were to end up homeless on the street because she couldn't pay her rent I'm sure regret would start to sink in.

  • @anjela1981 - Someone that bases their decisions upon something they believe in will never regret their decision....Unless they didn't really believe in that something. She will never regret what she did. Absolutely never...

  • @rboyko1989 If she didn't have a kooky religion, there wouldn't be a problem and she'd still have a job!

  • I MUST agree with her!!!!!!

  • @anjela1981 clearly she stated that if its against her morals she would rather do it because Gods law is more important. Its the same this as nurses refusing to do an abortion. I know a nurse that was asked to assist in an abortion procedure, she refused to take place because it was against her Morales. nothing wrong with that.

  • This clerk will no doubt look back in years to come and see the error of her ways. Hundreds of clerks in the south refused to do their job, quit, and/or cause massive discord when Loving VS Virginia was struck down. Many of them have publicly apologized for their lack of knowledge, understanding and accptance. She too will look back and regret. By the way, If I quit a job every time I didn't agree with a decision passed down from my superiors I wouldn't be employed.
