Barb DiGi shares her created flowchart of a true bilingual model in her series on "No ASL Left Behind" (NALB) based on the interactions of both languages that lead to a higher cognitive thinking level. Deaf students can learn direclty from written English with the support of ASL which is considered the most effective method. It is evident that there is a strong relationship between ASL and reading.

  • This is exactly right.

  • Great vlog. It frustrates me when hearing educators don't understand this. If a child is hearing, we encourage the teaching of French, or Spanish or even Sign. And we know they should start young, at day one. We know that early, multi-lingual development is important and beneficial to mental development. But when it comes to Deaf children, hearing people forget that ASL is a LANGUAGE. They think learning Sign will slow development. It's ridiculous. Keep up the good work Barb!

  • Thanks for the great information. I enjoy learning from you.
