When Amuck released his debut album Starving Artist in 2007, he turned heads in the Pittsburgh music scene with his potent delivery, precise polysyllabic lyrics, and raw knack for melodies and song structure. While Starving Artist earned him respect among his fellow MC's, a nomination for Best Solo Artist at the city's Hip-Hop Buffet Awards, and a sizeable underground internet following to the tu...ne of hundreds of thousands of online song plays, the rapper made it clear that he was carrying the mental blueprints for something more profound to come. In 2010, those blueprints were realized in the form of Improbabilities, a Sikes-produced release that transcended the genre borders of hip-hop and provided the eclectic artist with a new array of songs that he felt were more reflective of his personal identity and worldview.
Without sacrificing the wildly technical delivery that first brought him to the game, Amuck's lyrical content would now broach subjects like existentialism, religious fundamentalism, and evolution, all the while maintaining his original sardonic touch. On Improbabilities, he offers serious critiques on consequential subjects, then just as suddenly reverses course, sometimes in the same word-laden breath, to a funny, more flippant side -- in either case, big questions get raised, from "Is there a God and what makes you so sure?" to "Why is your girlfriend such a repulsive bitch?" Each investigation abandons every pretense of everyday societal politeness. Amuck's music challenges cultural complacencies, whether they occur at the personal level or exist on a global, historical scale. Improbabilities has received positive reviews from the Pittsburgh City Paper, highly acclaimed hip-hop website RepPghHipHop.com, and popular podcaster Michael Sorg of Sorgatron Media among others, while the single "The Unfettered Ones" has been given regular rotation on 105.9 FM's "Edge of the X" Series in addition to numerous college and internet radio stations nationwide. The album has struck a chord with a variety of demographics, from fans of introspective, more narrative-based hip-hop like Atmosphere to those of the more aggressive, high-energy rap in the vein of Tech Nine.
But while his studio work is a force to be reckoned with, it isn't until you've experienced Amuck's live show that one realizes what the fuss is all about: if the album tracks are the blueprints for his artistic vision, it's in the songs' live performance where their construction is fully realized. Amuck ignites the stage in a theatrical frenzy; his conviction is tangible as he blasts through even his most tongue-twisting tunes with word-perfect accuracy. Unlike many artists, he leaves no gap in the set-list for preaching, pandering, or insecure self-aggrandizing, instead preferring to instill every second with the fervor of his material, an onslaught of sound that stops only for the occasional intimate silence in the form of a spoken word, a capella-style verse. It's a performance that has captivated audiences from his hometown of Pittsburgh to the shores of North Carolina, as well as earned him both the credibility and honor of sharing the stage with names like Young Buck of G-Unit, Bizarre of D12, Wiz Khalifa, Jedi Mind Tricks, Champagne Champagne, Mac Miller, Hed PE, Mushroomhead, Awolnation and many others.
Shortly after the release of Improbabilities, Amuck collaborated with Grayskul's Onry Ozzborn (Rhymesayers Ent) on a recording titled "Amalgamate." The song further boosted Amuck's internet presence and was also the first song he had a large hand in producing. Amuck was also chosen for a guest appearance on a Born Hard Records mix tape set to drop in 2011, which features King Magnetic and Planetary of the acclaimed underground rap group Army of the Pharaohs. With a new full-length follow-up album in the works and an ever-expanding cult following of fans anticipating it, Amuck continues to make his unique voice heard and presence felt, not just locally but coastally, not just in hip-hop but in music overall.
