Why a pear? We-e-e-lll, we did a still life (fruit bowl) to learn lots of stuff about model building in class so that's what I had to work with when I wandered off into animation on my own...

Free Form Deformation in 3DS Max. A "lattice" set around the object allowing "soft" deformations like squash & stretch. Can't remember what it's called in Maya...
