In this Medical Minute, Dr. Del Pizzo answers a common question among kidney donors, "Can I live with only one?"

I hear what Dr. DelPizzo is saying but yet it's difficult to grasp the concept that we can live a full and healthy life with just one kidney. I've been looking into donating a kidney for some time now and this always stops me - the fear of "What if my remaining kidney fails". I would like to hear/see from folks who donated YEARS ago (say 20 or 30 years). That would be much more convincing for folks like me who continue to teeter on the border.
@sperouty I am going through the testing process to see if I am compatible to be my friend's donor...I too, would like to start living donor awareness and have several videos already featured...please let me know if there is anything more that I can do to further awareness. This is one area where the public is not informed enough on...
@sperouty I am giving a kidney to my mom on November 11th. I will look at your video. I am 41 and tumble (gymnastics, etc.). Do you think I will still beable to do gymnastics with 1 kidney? I didn't mention this to the psychologists.
I became a living kidney donor on August 2, 2010. I am doing great and I also know a few other living kidney donors that can attest to what this doctor is saying. Its amazing that most people have two kidneys, but really only need one. I am tryng to help kidney donaton awareness. I also have a video on You Tube.
I will be donating a kidney in 2 weeks. On this video the doctor mentioned being tested for diabetes afterwards.... and my dad had diabetes.
