Oscar-nominee, Dennis Hopper, is Paris Trout, an unrepentant racist in 1949 Georgia. This is a performance Dennis has described as one of the finest of his life playing a greedy and paranoid shopkeeper who murders the sister of a black man who refuses to repay Trouts IOU. When Trout is arrested for the crime, he is stunned and enraged, a man of the old south. Lawyer Harry Seagraves (Ed Harris, 4 time Oscar nominee) arrives to calm the waters in court, but Seagraves is soon caught in crimes of his own, a dangerous and doomed affair with Trouts wife, played by Barbara Hershey (Oscar nominee). Alls well that ends well but in this film it doesnt.
One of my favorite characters of alltime, and while Dennis Hopper virtually almost always played the same KIND of character with very little variation in the nuances of his character's maneurisms, here he definitely takes building Paris Trout as a character a little step farther. Some of the best trademarks of his character is how he's able to display such complete cowardie in his trademark way when he shoots the mother and daughter.

Great book, except for Hopper I don't like the casting much, though.

I agree, it is a very good film, however it isn't for everyone. The rape scene with the bottle is nearly as disturbing as the scene in Deliverance. Dennis Hopper may not have the range of some other actors, but the roles he plays (usually villains) are wonderfully done.
