0:18 Color Outside the Lines

As you walk in, pick up a post-it note of any color from a basket (or whatever receptacle). Keep it with you. 4-5 BNM musicians will begin a free-form improvisation, while an additional musician polls the audience for colors of their post-it notes. He/she then selects one representative of each color to come down and each select one musician to "label" with that color. After this is completed the entire audience is invited to come down and place their post-it notes on the whiteboard in Grant. As the notes (pun intended?) are added, improvisers interpret the arrangement of notes of their own color as a graphic score. In this way the audience shapes/colors the improvisation.

The words come from the medieval Icelandic "Hávamál," a poem that narrates how the god Odin discovered the runes. Hanging upon a tree for nine nights, wounded by a spear and exposed to the wind, Odin receives the runes--"which mighty powers made"--as though in a trance.
"Do you know how you must carve them? Do you know how you must interpret? Do you know how you must sacrifice?"
