  • I love how people are complaining about Goodman's playing.

Benny Goodman, in this state of decline, is still better than any of the clarinetists that comment on this, myself included, will be in their prime.

There's a reason they call him the King.

  • ok, anyone who says this is a bad performance kind of makes me mad, because, if you have actually played this piece, it is hard as heck and even the New York Phil can't play it perfectly. this orchestra did a good job with it and benny goodman is awesome.the point is the musicality and jazziness, not the notes, so stop complaining.

  • WONDERFUL!. THE TONE OF THE HIGER NOTES IS NOT EXACTLY BUT IS BENNY GOODMAN AND HE IS HUMAN TOO.

  • He played very well, especially considering his age. I truly enjoyed this.

And you, djphay, before making nasty comments about Benny Goodman, try to play this piece yourself in front of a symphony orchestra. I'm sure you won't even sound 1/10th as good as Benny does.

He is a legend, and who are you to bash him? Look at yourself first.

  • Copland wrote it for Benny. From one genius to another. Enough said!

  • @yurfinlfntsy

Don't believe it. REAL classical musicians--those of us who do it for a living appreciate each other's playing and, especially, the beauty of the music we are performing. We may be jealous of another's ability, but--we ARE human!

  • I love watching Copland smile as everything just happens... :D

  • anyone who was there was SO SO SO lucky....

  • @ipmoic, you are perfectly entitled to your opinion of this performance, informed no doubt by your fond appreciation of Benny Goodman. By the same token I am entitled to mine, and I hold it for reasons which I have stated in my earlier post on my own assessment of the merits of this perfomance (as opposed to simple nastiness). All art is a matter of subjective assessment and artists are both capable of failing, and also entitled to fail.

By the same token I am entitled to mine, and I hold it for reasons which I have stated in my earlier post on my own assessment of the merits of this perfomance (and not on nastiness). I don't see how his age is really relevant in that. The great things about all art are that it is a matter of subjective assessment and that artists are also entitled to fail.

  • @djphay Again, yours is the nastiest comment in the second half as well. Disaster? What do you know of disasters?? I took lessons with Leon Russianoff in the mid-seventies and guess whose lesson preceded me. That's right, Benny Goodman. He NEVER stopped trying to improve his playing. The fact that he is quite old here does not take much away from the beauty of his concept.

What a pleasure to watch and NOBODY--not even Ms. Kam--can beat Benny's glissando at the end--it goes on forever!

  • Poor guy. His age really showed in this vid. I've heard many more lively performances. I wish there was a video of him playing this even 5-10 years prior.
