That was the number of the Algerian government/some dubious historians. It is highly disputed and called propaganda even by people, who oppose France. I am not an expert, but 25.000 dead French and 150.000 dead Algerians seems to be believed. You should also look up the history: De Gaulle would have accpeted independence, but pro-French generals made a coup in Algeria...It is rather complicated..
