A Da Vinci surgical robot was on show at an open event to raise awareness of men's cancers for Blue September at Southmead Hospital on September 28 2011. Members of the public, former patients, prospective patients, staff and GPs all attended the event to try their hand at robotic surgery. Here, urology fellow Ramesh Thurairaja peels a grape.
Southmead Hospital was among the first in the country to have a surgical robot for urology. Since 2009 our Da Vinci robot has carried out more than 450 prostate cancer removals. You can find out more at www.nbt.nhs.uk/urology.

  • @greiteneis, egad! That's it! It was right in front of our faces! Energy crisis solved!

  • My uncle has prostate cancer and the surgery will use this Da Vinci machine. Normally the surgery is very invasive, involving a long incision to the abdomen. Normal doctors tools can also cause nerve damage leading to a longer recovery from the surgery with a whole host of side effects. This machine only make 4 or 5 1mm incisions and greatly improves the success of the surgery along with post-recovery. He is very fortunate that we have such technology today. As for some of the comments on this

  • Great now our future Robotic Overlords can trounce humanity at Jeopardy, beat our grandmasters at chess, and peel our skin. Somewhere in the world there's an overzealous scientist engineering a robot whose sole source of power is human misery.

  • These were the robots peeling off Anakin Skywalkers charred skin at the end of Revenge of The Sith!!!

  • @MythOfEchelon My boss and i have a neutral relationship i neither disrespect him or respect him... i do my job he does his and we're both happy :) and my comment towards cprtn has nothing to do with respect he posed a logical fallacy and i merely brought out to his attention what he had committed :P

  • @madman3891 You won't get very far in life with that attitude. Try getting a job by telling your boss that he needs to earn your respect first.

  • @MythOfEchelon respect is earned not given freely

  • @madman3891 Respect. It goes a long way.

  • That grape now owes the hospital 2,000 bucks

  • @cprtn Well first you assume that someone called jesus christ existed...second you assume that someone called jesus christ ever said anything...and third you assume that your first assumptions were correct and that this person wasn't lying about coming back :P a lot of assumptions...so when you find this magical character how about you just post it on youtube lol
