  • The lowest layer just passing by is Cumulus. The highest layer is Cirrus, again, just passing by. The middle layer, which is forming in a standing wave, is called a Lenticular cloud (Altocumulus lenticularis). It forms at the top of a wave of air (like a rapid in a stream), usually created as air flows up over a mountain range. Since the rapid is stationary, so is the clouds that forms at the top of it. The cloud typically evaporates as the air descends down the back side of the "rapid". :-)
