A Linux "live" version is the complete Linux operating system, contained on a single CD / DVD.

You just put the Linux live CD / DVD in your drive, start your system, and the entire Linux operating system boots and runs from the Linux "live" CD / DVD.

This includes the Linux OS, a Linux desktop and lots of Linux software programs, including utility software programs, application software programs and Linux servers.

One of the great benefits of booting with a Linux live CD / DVD is that you can also do a just few steps to go to the command line to run Linux commands.

This is an excellent way to learn how to run Linux commands, so you can learn how to administer a Linux system

The great thing about Linux live versions is that booting and running Linux from a live CD / DVD is one of the easiest, fastest and fun ways to get Linux running so you can learn how to use it!

Some Linux "live" versions are only "live" versions and can't be used to install Linux on a system. And other "live" versions are both "live" versions and installation versions.

For example, the Ubuntu Linux live CD / DVD is both a "live" version of Linux and an installation version of Linux.

You can boot a system with the Ubuntu Linux live CD / DVD and run Ubuntu "live" and you can also install Ubuntu Linux permanently on the hard disk of a system (from the same live CD / DVD).

Also, some Linux "live" versions allow you to save your work and some don't.

For example, the Ubuntu Linux live version lets you save data to a USB drive.

Learn how to use Linux with the I Learn Linux Video Tutorials. These Linux video tutorials show you step-by-step how to: put Linux on Windows so you can run Linux in Windows, install Linux from CD / DVD, run Linux commands, work as the Linux root user, and how to run Linux commands to administer a Linux system.

  • Hey,

I just had a quick question. I have Ubuntu cd. I have never tried it but I am thinking about trying the Live Cd. If i try the Live Cd will it take up space on my hard drive?

  • You boot with the Ubuntu Linux Live CD to run Linux entirely from CD without installing it - so, it doesn't take any hard disk space.

To get more information, have a look at the free sample Ubuntu Linux training videos at ilearnlinux dot com.

Thanks for the question and Good Luck!

  • if i get linux do i lose my windows vista? or can i swich to linux and vista when ever i want

  • You can install Linux on an existing Windows system and keep still Windows and this creates what is called a "dual boot" system.

IMPORTANT: Do a complete backup of Windows TWICE first.

After installing and rebooting, a menu allows you to either boot into Windows or boot into Linux, but with this setup, you can't run Windows and Linux at the same time.

  • You're welcome!

Another easy way to run Linux is to run Linux in Windows.

You can boot to Windows and download and install a free Linux player program and a free version of Linux and easily run Linux in Windows.

It may sound tricky, but it's actually easy.

You can see how to do all this in Free sample video tutorials at I Learn Linux dot com.

You can run lots of free Linux distributions in Windows, like Ubuntu Linux and many others.
