The Occupation of Wall Street presents an opportunity to highlight the economic struggles of New Afrikans (people of African descent in the diaspora) and their position as part of the 99%, since corporate and national wealth continues to be built on the stolen land of indigenous peoples and on the backs of New Afrikans, immigrants and poor people of European descent.
In this video, Freddy's Brooklyn Roundhouse presents comprehensive coverage of Sankofa Day, 2011 at Occupy Wall Street in NYC. This 2 part series documents members of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (www.mxgm.org) organizing a day of recognition to "defend the Human Rights of African people in the United States and around the world," while paying homage to their ancestors at the nearby African burial ground (www.africanburialground.gov).
From the October 12th 2011 MXGM statement:
"Enslaved Africans literally built Wall Street, the very wall from which Wall Street gets its name, where Africans were bought and sold. The sale of our Black bodies enriched the early traders and bankers. Now, everyday Wall Street bankers desecrate our ancestor's graves and dishonor their work by trading this blood money on top of an African burial ground".
These two shows highlight this struggle and demands for reparations, along with the current community clashes around gentrification, along with music, chants, speakers and a procession to the African burial ground and a ceremony to honor the ancestors at the memorial and beyond.
Featuring members of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Occupy the Hood, Occupy Wall Street, NYC Council Member Charles Barron, and those people who came out to demonstrate as part of NYC's 99%...

  • 11:28 The library is free! They have seminars at the NYC library on starting and running businesses! They have business owners who are willing to offer FREE advice and contacts! This is so bizarre!

  • Gentrification is easily interrupted. I'd rather this group meet up, utilize the system to their benefit. 'Cause other people are doing so, and they aren't hiding the information on how.

  • Too many white people in this gathering. I suspect infiltrators. @_@

  • See this occupy movement supports the down fall of capitalism and that's why I will never embrace it in any manner. I'm a black guy who deeply supports the tea party and their values and while I believe the occupy movements have good intentions, the idea's are just to radical and dangerous.

  • If this movement dose nothing else it has brought all Americans together to listen to each other.I am so glad to see America stand together to fight the good fight.Love and Peace to you all.Corrupt government shame on you.

  • Thanks for this video. I misses that day.
