At 9:05 p.m. June 29, Neepawa RCMP were advised of a fire at the Neepawa Canvas Works building, located on 1st Avenue in Neepawa.
Neepawa Fire Department responded within minutes of the call and were able to stop the spread of the fire to other nearby buildings. RCMP members attended the scene and assisted the fire department to gain access to the building.
By the time the RCMP arrived, the Neepawa Canvass Works building was engulfed in heavy smoke. In the end, the building was destroyed by the fire. Neepawa Fire Chief Scott Gibson said that by 3 a.m., the fire was extinguished.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner investigated the scene on Tuesday and concluded that the fire started in the basement. The cause of fire was “accidental, undetermined”.
The loss is estimated at $500,000 for both the building and contents.
