DSLR cameras have allowed filmmakers to have a great advantage -- the ability to utilize a relatively inexpensive camera to shoot large format, hi-def video rather than using expensive dedicated video cameras.

Now, Panasonic has announced their first entry into the forthcoming hybrid DSLR/video camera market - the Panasonic AG-AF100. With the capacity to maximize the potential of its high-resolution, large-format imager and all the professional video camera features you expect from a pro video camera -filmmakers can have the best of both worlds.

Steve Weiss and Jens Bogehegn had the opportunity to see the Panasonic AG-AF100 up close and personal when Jan Crittenden, Panasonic's Product Line Business Manager visited Zacuto's headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.

"It was great to have Jan, Tom and Ned from Panasonic stop by so we could test out the new kid on the block. It is an amazing camera, which addresses the issues that DSLR's have. However as a palm-style camera, it still has a limited ability to be shoulder mounted in a professional manner and to add professional accessories like matte boxes and follow focuses. As I expected, our tried and true Universal Base Plate http://store.zacuto.com/universal-baseplate-v3-includes-12-inch-rods.html works on this camera perfectly. In fact, with the addition of the HDMI out on the camera, we can pair our Z-Finder EVF http://www.zacuto.com/zfinderevf with the AF-100 to make it a fully capable and very comfortable shoulder rig which will have that familiar feeling to the pros - as if using a Varicam," said Jens.

  • Its a very ugly little camera but can't wait to have it. my AG-HMC150 is very angry at me lol... been waiting for this camera for a long time.. About time Panasonic.. All I need is the body.

PS: Zacuto chill with those high price tags for those metal bars and clamps rigs. C'om.. its aluminum. Is it silver plated? $300 to hold an iPod?? whoa!!

Most of us DONT work for hollywood. Some of your rigs are more expensive than the camera itselfe..

    take care.

    Customer Reviews:

"I love love love this camera. It shoots low light so well at 3200 ISO. I have 4 lenses I use. 3 Nikons and the 14-140mm Lumix that came with it (only through specific dealers). The fact that you can use any lens just by snapping on the correct adapter makes this camera a beast. I have heard refered to as the "SLR Killer" I have a ..."

  • TOO expensive

  • In all reviews i hear (or read) about aliasing, but for me the partial exposure issues are very very important. I am into filming storms and lightning. With my canon 7d the partial exposure is horrible :( Do you have any idea iff the af100 will show the same problem when i will film lightning?

  • @tywilliams100 better off renting a real motion camera

  • @girotube the rigs are total bullshit. Panasonic should make it shoulder capable

  • Christ all fucking mighty, why can't panasonic make it shoulder held like a real camera so to make it more practical?

  • Terminator weapon

  • The camera has a sweet spot of about 8 to 20 ft. Anything closer is unusable (hard on the eyes) and anything further begins to look flat (2D) and might actually become "ganked". That's when two backgrounds (behind the subject) are different due to the covergence trajectory and when merged in post - don't match. This causes eye-strain. Also the lenses not what you get with single lens systems or cimena lenses. Other than that - it's a nice camera and a useful tool for 3D filming.

  • Check out the Kipon EOS to MFT adapter with built in aperture control on the Panasonic AG-AF100 with the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens. The adapter has no electronics so it has no auto focus.
