MIDI featuring the Sound Blaster 16 and its OPL3 synthesizer. Song is from Thunder Force IV (Lightening Force in the USA), on the Sega Genesis. Here on Adlib it actually sounds a lot like the original YM2612 version, although it is a little more mellow.

Unlike many recordings of Adlib music available on Youtube, this is not inaccurate DOSBox emulated garbage-- this is recorded directly off the SB16 that is housed within my custom built Lego PC (pictured)-- see http://monochrome.yudia.net/legopc.html for more information.

I am taking requests for future OPL3 recordings, primarily MIDIs but possibly some DOS games if I've got the time, so don't forget to point me towards what you'd like to hear.

  • You do realize the Vibra16C chipset has NO OPL3 whatsoever? At some point, Creative dumped the Yamaha YMF262 on both the SoundBlaster 16 and SoundBlaster AWE32 in favor of what's known as CQM, Creative Quadratic Modulation, a Creative-made clone of the YMF262(it's meant as a step up over OPL3 while being able to provide (inaccurate) backwards-compatibility with OPL2 and OPL3). It doesn't come too close to real OPL2 or OPL3 by any means.

  • @Ace9921 Well, I didn't know that when I put this video up, but from floating around VOGONS for a while I've learned that. To be very honest, though, I really can't tell a difference. Example: I own Lemmings, which utilizes OPL2, and it sounds exactly the same as it does on the Aztech card in my 486DX2, which has an actual YMF262. Hell, I even have an Intel 810 board with an onboard ESS Solo-1 and ESFM sounds the same too.

  • Is the LEGO PC still working?

  • @Zolg08 Indeed it is. It went down for some upgrades recently, but now it's chugging along better than ever.

  • how do get the theme?

how do you convert de YM2612 format into a opl3 ?

  • @manuelink64 It's just a MIDI.

  • To be honest, i don't even think this midi was designed with this sound card in mind. Doesn't do the sound card full justice.

  • I've uploaded a few videos of Star Wars X-Wing using various sound cards on my channel, all of which use different MIDI wavesets, true OPL2/OPL3, CQM, other cloned/software-emulated YMF262s and so on. X-Wing shows very clearly the differences between true OPL2/OPL3 and other cloned/software-emulated YMF262s(Doom does too, but it's less noticeable with ESFM than with CQM. CQM sounds VERY raw and overall really poor in Doom).

  • @MrKsoft - I guess the games you play don't really show how different CQM and ESFM sounds from true OPL2 and OPL3. I've got a variety of different computers running Windows 95 and DOS as well as various different sound cards with CQM(SoundBlaster 16 WavEffects CT4170 and AWE64 Value CT4520), ESFM(ESS AudioDrive) and a Yamaha YMF262(SoundBlaster Vibra16 CT2260). In the games I play(mainly Star Wars X-Wing and Star Wars TIE Fighter), the difference between OPL2/OPL3, CQM and ESFM is noticeable.

  • so is there a DOS version? How did you obtain the midi?

  • TF IV on a different chip? What a treat! It's interesting to see how the sound quality changes.

  • @MrKsoft Cool. I have one old pc in storage. too bad my house is cluttered and I don't have where to put it
