International Day of Action for the Seals

New York City (March 15, 2009): Footage of a peaceful demonstration in midtown Manhattan, part of a global day of action for the seals that are massacred every year in Canada. Demonstrators gathered for outreach near the Canadian Consulate General Office, at Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan, and later walked around the neighborhood with a message of humane treatment of animals. A video near the consulate documented the horrific seal kill for those who wanted to learn more, and signatures were collected for a letter to the Canadian government to demand an immediate end to the annual massacre. The demonstration, jointly sponsored by Friends of Animals (FOA) and New York City Animal Rights Meetup, coincided with FOA's Canadian demonstration held in Victoria, British Columbia.

Canada's commercial seal slaughter is the world's largest organized kill of marine mammals, and it has been occurring for decades. The Canadian government continues to subsidize the seal kill, even though there are more viable and humane ways of ensuring the livelihoods of Canadian citizens.
