Social Security was started because so many elderly were living in poverty. There were weekly account of old people found starved to death at the time. It has been the most successful anti-poverty program ever conceived. And there may be some solubility problems with it, but don't pretend you conservatives give a shit about it because you've been trying to destroy it for 60 years. Free market ideas don't work in every area. This is one of them.

@swu880 what is broke? The government or Social Security? The government is in major debt which means that many countries and individuals (including Social Security Trust) are holding a lot of U.S. Treasury bonds. Technically Social Security is not broke until the government defaults on the bonds. We can fix our government but our legislators are so obligated to big money interests that they refuse to do so.  They won't until "we the people" do something radical --like a general strike.

I would have to say i am broke, regardless of how i paper it over. I mean i could also take $1 from Jane and promise to pay her back $10 then do same for anna, bob, jill and jack.
