H. L. Hunley was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that demonstrated both the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. The Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy warship, although the submarine was also lost following the successful attack. The Confederates lost 32 men in Hunley's career. The submarine was renamed after the death of her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley, and some time after she had been taken into the Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina.

Epic Scan has played a significant role in the documentation of the H.L. Hunley Submarine, Remains, and artifacts. We have utilized every piece of hardware and software in our extensive toolbox. This project has evolved side by side with digital documentation technology. Virtually every possible deliverable has been requested and utilized. From 3D point clouds and surface models to cross sections and animations the scope of the Hunley is a true representation of what the most recent technology is capable of.

  • I am astounded at how sophisticated this submarine was. It is incredible that each time it went out to sea, it sank. I can't imagine how they pulled it up twice during the Civil War - I wish I could read up on that. One more testament to the determined, formidable South!

  • RIP BRAVE CREW OF CSS HUNLEY...

  • So these guys made an underwater PADDLE BOAT from steel , put a BOMB on it and went RAMMING stuff . THAT , IS SOME GANSTA SHIT !!!!!!!

  • @paulhunter123 Also, General Beauregard, the commander of Charleston's defense, had determined after the second sinking that the Hunley would not submerge to deliver a torpedo - it was too dangerous. Instead, the sub would ride low in the water and deliver torpedoes via a spar.

  • @paulhunter123 It was an attempt to lift the illegal federal blockade of Charleston.

  • @paulhunter123 It's not a true submarine, but rather a submersible boat. The topside conning towers were always above water. This tradition carries on by all modern subs being called "boats".

  • That is one hell of a ghetto Submarine.

  • Erhm... A compass inside an iron hull ?

  • Hunley is a family obsession! Keep sending in clips.

  • lol i live on charleston afb and i been to fort summter and i seen the hunley like 50 times but it sucks because it has to be in a tank becase its been in water for almost 100 years and it could corrupt =[[ and when i go on the tours cuz of my moms friend they said the people inside it had to fit into a 18inch hole or something like that

  • i guess it makes sense they had to cut up the bodies. it sounds so gruesome, though.

i would not want a 'recovery diving' job.

  • Hard Hat divers on surface supplied air. They'd raise it to the surface, pump out the water, and get it back to shore. They had to cut up the bodies and bring them out in pieces as they were too bloated to fit out through the narrow entry/exit hatch.
