On Sunday, August 30, we chased the Wisconsin and Southern Prairie du Chien Subdivision train. Power was a single SD40-2 facing long-hood forward, this time 4008 and its haunting Leslie horn.

First quick shot is as we wait at the crossing of W. Washington Avenue in Madison. Then we pace it along Campus Drive/University Avenue, as it crosses Highland Avenue and University Bay Drive.

Next it's on to the Old Middleton Road underpass. The 25 MPH track speed and a network of side streets through Middleton give it a pretty good lead on us, so our next opportunity for a shot is the Willow Lane crossing west of Middleton, in a 10 MPH slow order.

The train reaches the end of the slow order at Cross Plains, and we try a pace along Highway 14 despite the horrible sun position. We barely make it to downtown Black Earth in time to get it screaming past the old Milwaukee Road depot.

We get delayed by a wrong turn onto a dead-end road on the way out of Black Earth, so by the time we get to Mazomanie they have already stopped and run around two loaded centerbeam flats to be spotted at a lumberyard. They shove these past the depot, then we see the locomotive pull out of the spur.

Our last shot is the train departing Mazomanie.

  • Why do some trains face long-hood forward?

  • Usually because there is no way to turn the engine at one end of the line or the other.
