Listening to these pieces by people these days is like watching a Kid pick up a 150pound sword and try to battle a Giant with 8 arms holding 4 shields and 4 swords. It's just sad but at the same time interesting to watch.

Let's not forget Chopin in the list also, an amazing composer and a great friend of Liszt's. The three are probably the masters of melancholy piano, and composed mindblowing pieces.

The incredible thing is that this should be faster...it starts with a "molto vivace" then turns to "più presto" and finally into a big "accelerando"!! You can't hear any of these in this rendition of howard but it's obvious, these studies are really impossible!

Liszt always give me the feeling that he was decades ahead of his time speaking about harmonies... I mean, take for example the progression between 1:42 and 1:50 or the three slow chords after the opening chromatic section of the 2nd ballade, or the beginning of the 1st mephisto-waltz... Doesn't they sound modern or jazzy? No other composers of his time wrote that kind of chords down on the score...
